Carmen Jean Smith
Weaves a Tapestry of TV Diversity
Interview by JOSEPH G. NAZEL, JR.
Q&A - Page 3:
Q:
Programs'
goals?
SMITH We look at all the programs
periodically and we figure out ways in which
to enhance them. With the directing program,
we just created another enhancement to it-taking
it to another level. We have been granted
almost a half a million dollars, and we
are hiring directors for our prime time
shows
And we have taken the writing program to
another level, in that … we have been
awarded monies to take our writing fellows
and pay for them to be staffed on prime
time shows, and not just our fellows, but
creating opportunities for other staff level
writers in the industry.
Q: How do you juggle your many
responsibilities?
SMITH: You just do. I think
that when you get as much satisfaction as
I do out of the work, you have to make sure
you have a balance. The work is important
and it is very gratifying but I think you
have to have a balance in life. So I balance.
But I don't tire of it. I enjoy every minute
of it.
Q: Personal goals?
SMITH: I think that one
has five or six careers in them …
I have several already. I am certain that
I will advance and do other things. There
is just a world of opportunity.
But I am very comfortable where I am right
now, and I am not ready to pick up and go
anytime soon. This is a great opportunity
here, and the work we are doing …
impacts on so many lives that I'm going
to be here for a little while.
